A practical definition
Mental math is the ability to calculate accurately using number relationships, place value, and practiced strategies — without relying on a written algorithm or a calculator for every step. It is not about showing off speed. It is about understanding numbers well enough to choose a clean path to an answer.
What mental math is not
Mental math is not the opposite of school math. Written methods still matter. Calculators still matter. Mental arithmetic sits beside them as a judgment layer: estimating a bill, checking whether an answer is reasonable, or solving a small problem quickly while your hands are busy.

How Mental Math teaches it
